Royal Purple Big Leaf Hydrangea

Hydrangea macrophylla 'Royal Purple'

Photo: Royal Purple Big Leaf Hydrangea

General description

A compact hydrangea sporting large flower heads of rich purple, considered one of the darkest colored varieties.

Plant requirements

Provide a humus-rich, moist, well-drained soil and grow it where it gets mid-day shade.

Maintenance

When pruning, remove spent flower heads and prune back other shoots to encourage branching and fullness. Although the coloration of the flowers is influenced by the soil pH, it is actually the presence or absence of aluminum that affects flower coloration.

Practical use

A good choice for confined spaces or smaller gardens.
