Moth Orchid

Phalaenopsis (General)

Photo: Moth Orchid

General description

Phalaenopsis have large waxy deep green leaves with thick white to green (photosynthetic) roots. Periodically, the plant grows a long stock and blooms. Blooms can resemble instects, come in a variety of colors, scents, and shapes making them a popular plant to collect.

Plant requirements

According to the American Orchid Society watering will depend on what the orchid is planted in. Moss stays moist longer than bark chips which should be watered about once a week. Plants potted in moss should be watered when the top of the moss feels dry. Some orchid tags (especially for phals) recommend watering mini phals with one ice cube per week, while large, or regular, phals should have three ice cubes per week. Occassional misting can be helpful to keep the humidity up.
