The so called stinking iris, Iris foetidissima, has modest early to mid summer flowers, compared to other iris, but its clusters of long-lasting scarlet berries, spilling out of open seedpods, steal the show in autumn. Unusual among iris, it also tolerates dry shade, making it a tough, valuable ground-cover plant.
