Baptisia australis  •

Photo: Baptisia australis

General description

Easy to grow native springs from the ground in April with vigorous growing stems that form a big, beefy bush. Flower buds at branch tips produce tall spires of purple blooms against deep green foliage. Ideal for sunny borders, meadows, wildflower gardens. Excellent cut and dried flowers.

Plant requirements

Average, well drained soil in full sun to part shade.

Maintenance

Divide every 4-5 years. To encourage flowering, pinch old flowers as they produce seeds, or leave in place for seed pods that shake and rattle in the wind. May need staking in shadey areas.
