  • Andy T.Can a Euphorbia species cactus survive outside in the winter in New England? Or can it be cut back? It is getting too tall for my 8' ceilings...

  • William C. William C. Euphorbias are not technically Cacti. They are the Cactus equivalent that originates in Africa. It is a semi-tropical plant and will not withstand freezing temperatures. It can be pruned back without harm to the plant. It will bleed white sap profusely, but it will heal and be fine. Use a sharp knife or pruners to make a clean cut at any point on the stem. New growth will emerge just below where you make the pruning cut and grow upward from there. Pruning may also encourage branching.
