  • Ken H.When in Greexe last year I admired a splendid plant at a seaside cafe. The proprietor told me it was a "cockerel' plant and gave me some seeds. I now have a dozen plants in pots which have flowered outdoors (see photo). I am not sure what the plant is and whether it is hardy or not in the UK. Can anyone identify or help?

  • MJ MJ I don't recognise this plant at all I'm afraid - however, because I don't recognise it, and I've been a professional gardener for 35 years+, the likelihood is its not hardy here in the UK, so the safest thing to do is try to overwinter indoors one or two of them, or collect any seed that's formed to start afresh next year.

  • MJ MJ A photo showing the whole plant, top to bottom, might help with ID,along with a close up of a flower - in this pic, the 'flowers' look more like modified leaves which happen to be deep pink...

  • Ken H. Ken H. Thanks again to MJ who suggests it is a Selosia. I am pretty sure he is right since it the fulol name is Coxcomb Selosia which would explain why the Greek taverna owner called it 'cockerel'. The fethery pink flowers do in fact resemble a roosters coxcomb.
