  • Found this tiny pink flower with a long green stem growing right through the middle of it along the road in Calaveras County, California this May (it’s growing right under the orange CA poppy in this picture). Can anyone help identify it? Thanks!

  • Susan D. the "stem" is a seed pod forming on a spent CA poppy flower. As the orange petals fall off of the flower, the pink base remains, and from the center of the pink base a seed pods forms. The seed pod starts out green then turns brown, then the brown pod splits down the middle exposing the tiny dark round seeds inside. Monday August 26 at 15:25
  • E C. Wow, Susan, many thanks! Truly appreciate this thorough response. We’d just about given up on learning what this was. Thanks again for taking the time to explain! E Monday August 26 at 15:40
